Melone tops D-2 in hitting

Jared Melone (West Chester, Quakertown Blazers, 2016; Allentown Railers, 2017) is the leading hitter in NCAA Division II with a .482 average through games of May 6, 2018.

The junior 1B/LF is 79 for 164 with 15 doubles, ten home runs and 67 RBIs in 44 games. West Chester won the PSAC East and enters the PSAC Tournament on Thursday in Johnstown.

Outfielder Austin Edgette (Bloomsburg, Lehigh Valley Catz, 2016) placed third in hitting with a .457 average and second in On Base Percentage with a .547 OBP.

Middle infielder Alec Craig (Chesnut Hill, South Jersey Giants 2017) topped D-2 in stolen bases per game with 47 SBs in 44 games. Michael Rothmund (Illinois-Springfield, Quakertown Blazers, 2015) was second with 72 RBIS. The senior first baseman was third with 21 home runs and total bases with 154.

LHP Dan Wirchansky (Pace, North Jersey Eagles, 2016) tops NCAA Division II with a 0.71 ERA and 0.57 WHIP over 51 innings in six appearances.

Trivino's MLB debut followed by a win

Lou Trivino (Slippery Rock, Quakertown Blazers, 2011) began his MLB career with a hectic, but enjoyable 24 hours in Oakland.

Trivino learned of his promotion at a Des Moines, Iowa pizza restaurant late Monday night. On Tuesday evening he made his MLB debut with a scoreless ninth inning as the Oakland A’s defeated the Chicago White Sox 10-2.

On Wednesday afternoon the A’s and White Sox were involved in a 14 inning marathon affair. Trivino tossed three scoreless innings, the 12th, 13th and 14th. Matt Olsen’s walk-off single in the bottom of the 14th gave the A’s a 12-11 victory and Trivino picked up his first MLB win.

Tim Mayza (Millersville, Quakertown Blazers, 2011) recorded a scoreless ninth inning on Wednesday evening as the Toronto Blue Jays defeated the Kansas City Royals 15-5.

Lou Trivino (Slippery Rock, Quakertown Blazers, 2011) was called up by the Oakland A’s from the Nashville Sounds on Tuesday.

The 6-5 RHP had a save in three appearances with Nashville and retired all 13 batters he faced, eight by strikeouts.

The former ACBL All-Star joins former Blazer teammate and current Toronto Blue Jay reliever Tim Mayza (Millersville, Quakertown Blazers, 2011) in the American League and will be the 109th former ACBL player to reach the Major Leagues.

In other MLB transactions RHP Kevin McCarthy (Marist, Sag Harbor, 2011) and LHP Donnie Hart (Texas State, Westhampton, 2010) were recalled to the Kansas City Royals and Baltimore Orioles respectively on April 13.

RHP Casey Lawrence (Albright, Kutztown, 2008-09) was optioned to Tacoma by the Seattle Mariners on April 14. Hart was optioned back to Norfolk on April 15 after not allowing an earned run in two relief appearances for the O’s.

Blue Jays recall Mayza from Buffalo

LHP Tim Mayza (Millersville, Quakertown Blazers) was recalled to the Toronto Blue Jays on Tuesday. Mayza posted a 1.69 ERA and 1.13 WHIP in ten relief appearances in spring training.

Several former ACBL players are off to good starts in the Major Leagues.

RHP Zack Godley (Tennessee, Southampton) has allowed only one run in two starts with 2-0 record for the Arizona Diamondbacks. He has an 0.64 ERA in 14 innings.

D-Back teammate SS Nick Ahmed (UConn, Westhampton) is hitting .321 with eight RBIs.

LHP Chris O’Grady (George Mason, North Jersey Eagles) has six relief appearances for the Miami Marlins with a 1.59 ERA and 0.88 WHIP.

Mayza promoted to Toronto Blue Jays

Tim Mayza Photo Courtesy of Toronto Blue Jays Organization Tim Mayza (Millersville, Quakertown Blazers, 2011) will be the sixth former ACBL player to make a MLB debut this season.

The Toronto Blue Jays purchased his contract from their triple AAA Buffalo Bisons franchise on Monday.

The 6-3, 220 lb. LHP was a 13th round selection of the Blue Jays in the 2013 MLB Draft.

Mayza posted a 0.93 ERA over 11 relief appearances and 19.1 innings at Buffalo.

He started this season with the AA New Hampshire Fisher Cats where he posted four saves and three holds in 33 innings.

Blazers lose to Allentown in championship series
August 6, 2017

The Allentown Railers won their third consecutive ACBL title by defeating the Quakertown Blazers 6-2 and 4-0 on Sunday before a large crowd in Memorial Park.

Rhett Jacoby (Moravian) and John Yocum (Rider) pitched outstanding games for the winners while Jared Melone (West Chester) topped the Railers offense with four hits and three RBIs in the doubleheader.

Mike Anastasia (NJIT) posted a solo home run for the Blazers in the opener while Chance DiFebbo (Delaware) added two hits. Nate Sides (Alvernia) had the only hit for the Blazers in the second game.

The Blazers finish their 34th season with a 21-17 record.

ACBL Championship series starts on Sunday at Quakertown
August 5, 2017

The Allentown Railers and Quakertown Blazers will play a doubleheader at Memorial Park on Sunday in Quakertown at 1pm as part of the final best-of-three series.

Allentown advanced to the finals by sweeping the North Jersey Eagles on Friday evening by the scores of 4-1 and 7-4.

Quakertown swept the South Jersey Giants on Thursday with a 10-9 win in the opener and a 2-1 win in the nightcap.

Game 3, if necessary, will be played on Monday August 7th at Allentown.
